Class Size: 6 students

Description:
This workshop will focus on the image preparation for and craft of Relief Printmaking. Printing will take place on an etching press with felts or a wood backer and oil based inks.
Participants will work from hand carved images on Linoleum, Wood, HDF, or Sintra.
This is a two day workshop and participants must continue through both days if they wish to sign up.
Day 1: Image transfer/setup, carving session. 3 hours instruction, 4 hours open studio for carving.
Participants will learn how to carve small images in each of the above media.
Day 2: Printing 3 hours instruction, 4 hours open studio for printing.
This three hour session will cover Press setup and operation of our etching press, layout for paper/paper tearing, TEE-BAR, and finally we will learn how to efficiently print!
Day 2 will possibly also include an optional 1 hour long 'digital' oriented session wherin students can learn to set up computer files to be routed on Kontraptioneering’s CNC table, which is located directly next door to Haven Press.
With this you could make images from drawings, halftone photographs, vector drawings, etc., have them cut into a block of wood, sintra, or mdf, and then either ink and print to paper or carve some more first by hand.
Materials and tools:
Expendable/consumable materials, including proofing and some editioning paper, are provided during the course. Students will have the opportunity to demo various tools on site, purchase extra paper for use outside the class, and will leave with a few sample (8X10 and smaller) types of blocks to cut after the first day. Ink and rollers/brayers will be provided during the second day.
(If you have a serious interest in relief carving as a medium, we recommend purchasing a specific set of tools prior to the workshop to have on hand and work with. We will have several of these sets on site which can be sold, but if you wish to buy your own ahead of time, when you sign up/place your deposit, we’ll send you information on where to buy the recommended set of 6 carving tools. Cost is about 51.00-85.00, depending, and we will give you 20% of the tools off the cost of the workshop fee if you buy a set before the course/send us proof of purchase.)
If you want to sign up for the course, email mark@havenpress.com - classes are limited to 6 students, so advance sign up is recommended.
